“The ultimate goal of this program is to take our OFWs out of low skilled and oppressive service work, and assist them to land better paying, higher skilled jobs.”

This was according to Secretary Guiling “Gene” Mamondiong regarding TESDA’s Onsite Assessment Program (OAP), which was conducted in Riyadh and Al Khobar, both in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, last April 28-30.

Up to 76 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were given onsite competency assessment, 70 of which successfully earned their respective certificates in Computer Systems Servicing NC II, Technical Drafting NC II, and Visual Graphic Design NC III. Currently ongoing are the assessments in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. Previously, similar assessments were conducted in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Secretary Mamondiong further encouraged OFWs interested in onsite assessment to inquire about the program at the Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLO) in their respective countries. Representatives from the Authority will soon visit the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) to inspect potential Assessment Centers and meet with those who want to register and implement tech-voc programs under TESDA’s Unified TVET Program Registration and Accreditation System.

TESDA TO LAUNCH EMERGENCY SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAM FOR OFWs

April 25, 2017

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) announced that it will launch the “Emergency Skills Training Program" to assist returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

TESDA Director General, Secretary Guiling “Gene” Mamondiong said that returning OFWs may submit their application form starting May 1 so that they may avail of the skills training program.

Apart from returning OFWs, those who will be prioritized in the program are the drug dependents and their families, immediate relatives of policemen or soldiers who died in the line of duty, family members of traffic enforcers and the marginalized sector.

Initial courses to be offered by TESDA during the emergency skills training on May 31 are service engine mechanical components, carpentry, masonry, maintain and repair audio/video products and systems at process food by salting, curing and smoking.

Other training programs of TESDA include cookery, welding, plumbing, electrical installation maintenance and bus/straight truck driving.

“In consonance with this, all Regional and Provincial Training Centers including TESDA Administered Schools are directed to maintain a skeletal force to accept applicants to the said program starting May, 1, 2017 (Labor Day)," said Secretary Mamondiong in a memorandum he issued.

Mamondiong also said that the Emergency Skills Training Program is part of the Special Training for Employment Program (STEP) and Training for Work Scholarship Program (TWSP) of the agency.

TESDA also said that it would provide free assessment and certification, free starter kit and transportation allowance.
